Name: Andrew Smith
Born:
2 April 1973, Rochdale Lancashire
Home location: Rochdale Lancashire
Profession: Commercial Vehicle Trader
Racing Career:
MiniStox: British Champion & Points Champion 1988
Hot Stox: European Gold Roof Champion 1992
F1 Stock Car: World Champion: 1994, 2006,
2008
British Champion: 2000, 2002, 2007
National Series Champion: 2006,
National Points Champion: 1995,
UK Open Champion: 1993, 1995, 1997, 2000
Best moment in racing career:
Coming back from dead and buried to win the last four finals of the
1995 season and snatch the National Points Championship from John Lund
and Frankie Wainman Junior. Winning the World Final in 1994 was
great but it all happened so early in my career that it was all a bit
of a blur - I would love to do it again and really savour it.
Worst moment in racing career:
Racing at Hednesford the day after John Goodall was killed. The
atmosphere was awful and the drivers weren't racing properly - just
going through the motions. I never want to experience anything like
that again.
Ambitions for the future:
To carry on enjoying my racing and for continued success.
Favourite racing surface:
Shale.
Favourite track:
Probably Coventry because of the show they put on and the facilities
rather than the actual track. They have spoilt it a little by making
it smaller.
Least favourite track:
Buxton, its always freezing cold with no cars!
Favourite closed track:
Crewe and Bradford - high speed flat out sideways tracks, to me
that is what F1 Stock Car Racing is all about.
Least favourite closed track:
Bolton,- small, tarmac and boring.
Biggest influence:
My father, Stuart Smith: Number 1.
Most respected opponent:
John Lund, no doubt about it! not only for his superb tactical
ability but for his annoying talent at setting up a Stock Car so well
- it looks almost effortless to drive.
What aspect of F1 do you most enjoy?:
The fact that if you are willing to spend the time and learn car
set ups, you don't need to spend a fortune to win at F1 Stock Cars. Also good drivers with genuine ability tend to shine in F1.
What aspect of F1 do you least enjoy?:
That we get little recognition from the established racing press.
Unless you race on circuits in glorified go karts then they don't want
to know. But the truth is our product would wipe the floor with the
vast majority of circuit racing and our drivers are far more
adaptable.
If you were given the chance to make one rule
change what would it be?:
To reward drivers for achieving Super Star grade. They are more often
than not the ones who put the most effort into the sport and do the
most meetings. There is no incentive and you get better rewards for
being a blue top.
Given the chance to race any other race formula
what would it be?:
In terms of sheer adrenalin - a World of Outlaw Sprint Car. In
terms of Racing Professionally, probably a Nascar Winston Cup Stockcar.
